Sarah's story (name changed)
The first day of the course, Sarah couldn't make it through the door. Anxiety had stopped her from finishing courses before, and just getting to the venue that morning had taken everything she had. She stood outside, unsure whether she could go in. But she wanted to work with children, and she knew this course was the best option to allow her to do that.
When Sarah became overwhelmed outside the training venue, our trainer went out to meet her, offering a warm welcome, reassurance and time to talk in a quiet space. This one-to-one support helped her calm down and feel safe enough to take part. The trainer offered to sit beside her in the classroom on the first day and made herself fully available throughout the programme for check-ins, quiet breaks and continued reassurance.
Over the following days, Sarah returned and showed a clear improvement in confidence, communication and engagement. She steadily completed her units and learning. The trainer continued check-ins to ensure she felt supported and able to remain in the group learning environment.
Sarah fully completed the course and attended the post-programme guaranteed interview, showing just how much her confidence had grown in a short space of time. Her commitment and growth were recognised immediately, and she was offered a position as a Childcare Assistant at an after-school club. She also has a place on the SCQF Level 7 Modern Apprenticeship in Social Services (Children and Young People), so she'll work towards a recognised qualification on the job and continue building her dream career in the Early Learning and Childcare sector.
