Refreshing skills and returning to work

Joseph's story

Joseph is in his early sixties and had spent years working in the security sector. After a long stretch out of work, his Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence had lapsed, and he wasn't sure he'd be able to get back into the line of work he knew best. The employment gap had knocked his confidence, his mental health had taken a hit, and he worried his age and time away would count against him.

He came to JobFit through a referral from the Jobcentre and enrolled on the course to prepare for his SIA exam. The training covered the up-to-date knowledge he needed, alongside the practical side of the role, and the team worked closely with him as he found his footing again. He passed the SIA exam first time — a welcome boost after the doubts he'd come in with. JobFit then helped him through the SIA badge application, which has a fair bit of paperwork and vetting to navigate.

With his badge in hand, he was put in touch with JSL Services Ltd, one of our recruiting employers. A bit of interview coaching, a refreshed CV and some preparation later, he attended the interview, impressed the team and was offered the job.

Joseph has been working as a Security Officer since September 2024 and is getting on well in the role. He's said he doesn't think he'd have made it back into work without the course - a reminder that with the right preparation and a bit of support, a long gap doesn't have to be the end of the line.
