Omer relocated to the UK after being displaced from a war-torn country and faced the significant challenge of rebuilding both his personal and professional life. Although he had previously trained in dentistry, he was unable to continue this career immediately in the UK and needed to explore alternative employment opportunities while adapting to a new country, culture and employment system.

As a single parent, Omer balanced family responsibilities while working towards a new career. Despite these challenges, he remained committed to supporting others through his voluntary role with the British Red Cross. His work involved providing translation support, assisting with documentation and helping vulnerable individuals access the correct charities and support services.

Omer applied to the JobFit Early Learning and Childcare programme to gain new skills, increase his employability and build a long-term career within the childcare sector. His caring nature, commitment to helping others and willingness to learn made him an excellent candidate for the programme.

During the course he achieved the SQA NQ Process of Play unit and successfully completed additional employability training including Child Protection, Food Safety and Hygiene, and Infection Control (Scotland).

Throughout the programme, Omer developed his understanding of child development, planning safe and engaging activities, safeguarding, teamwork and supporting children's wellbeing. He consistently participated in classroom discussions and embraced opportunities to build his confidence and knowledge.

Following successful completion of the course, Omer secured employment with Daddy Day Care and is due to begin his new role in August 2026. He will also continue his development by undertaking a Modern Apprenticeship SVQ with Direct Partners, providing a clear progression route into a sustainable career within the childcare sector. Ongoing assessor support will help him achieve his SVQ while gaining valuable workplace experience. This will enable him to establish a long-term career in the childcare sector, continue supporting children and families, and build a secure future for himself and his family while making a positive contribution to his local community.
