We partnered with Staff Power to deliver Advanced Manufacturing training specifically contextualised to the Installation/Maintenance Technician opportunities at Smart Solutions, a JobFit recruiting employer. The teaching, practical activities, assessments and employability preparation use realistic examples drawn from an automated, technology-enabled manufacturing environment.
Learners will develop and evidence the behaviours, technical awareness and continuous-improvement skills sought by the employer, with particular emphasis on automated production and conveyor systems, safe systems of work, equipment checks, basic maintenance support, material flow, quality control, productivity, 5S, fault identification and escalation, teamwork, defined procedures and continuous improvement.

This scheme of learning has been designed so that Intent, Implementation and Impact are explicit and sequenced across the eight-day programme.
The existing Lean curriculum remains the foundation, while Lean Six Sigma Green Belt concepts are deliberately interleaved at points of natural crossover and extended through dedicated project, data, change-management, stakeholder and knowledge-transfer sessions.
Learning progresses from Lean and Lean Six Sigma foundations and customer value (Day 1), through Measure and Analyse activity (Days 2–3), Improve and Control (Days 4–5), structured project management and stakeholder practice (Day 6), project consolidation and feedback (Day 7), and knowledge transfer, reflection, employability and final assessment (Day 8).
Each session pre-teaches essential vocabulary, activates prior learning, uses modelling and guided practice, and revisits project/RUN data so that learners build secure, connected knowledge over time. Adaptive strategies, checks for understanding and stretch-and-challenge are embedded throughout so that all learners, including those with additional needs, can access and deepen the curriculum.
By the end of the eight-day programme, learners will be able to demonstrate:
● Secure knowledge of core Lean principles, terminology and tools (5S, PNA, Fishbone analysis, SOPs, visual management, Kaizen), evidenced through completed workbook tasks and produced artefacts (process maps, audits, SOPs, visual indicators)
● Measurable improvement in a practical task (RUN 1 to RUN 2), evidenced through logged data and calculated averages
● Development of teamwork, communication, leadership and conflict-resolution skills, evidenced through observation, debriefs and peer/self-reflection
● Naturally embedded English, maths and digital skills, applied in vocationally relevant contexts rather than as standalone exercises
● An understanding of British Values in a workplace context — collaborative decision-making (Democracy), following agreed procedures (Rule of Law), freedom to contribute ideas (Individual Liberty), and respectful teamwork (Mutual Respect & Tolerance)
● Awareness of Prevent-related themes — inclusion, belonging, healthy conflict resolution and safe online behaviour — modelled through everyday teaching rather than delivered as a one-off topic
● Readiness for their next steps, through completed ILPs, CV review, job-application practice and course feedback
This course is available for Edinburgh residents only, aged 18 or over, with the Right to Work, who are either unemployed or looking for a career progression and who are not in full-time education; must be confident in using English with min National 4 English, or equivalent; National 4 Applications of Mathematics/Mathematics, or equivalent and basic digital skills.
This training is for people interested in starting or advancing a career in advanced manufacturing, particularly in hands-on technical roles involving automated machinery, production equipment and conveyor systems. It would suit individuals who are practical, safety-conscious and comfortable working in a technology-driven production environment, with an interest in developing skills in equipment monitoring, basic maintenance, quality assurance and continuous improvement.
